Music Monday

Hola, amigos!

I’ve been pontificating- should I do a running post on my blog or should I let my posts flow organically? If I even do such a post, what should it be? What day of the week? How often? It seemed like a pain in the butt.

But here I am! I’ve finally found something I won’t get bored of posting- MUSIC!

Welcome to my new post series: Music Mondays. There will be at least two Music Mondays a month, and each will contain at least two songs. The theme will vary, such as favorite 80s rock tracks, current workout songs or maybe songs I listen to while cleaning, etc.

With that being said: let’s get to the music!

This week’s theme: 1950s Inspiration

Here is Scott Bradlee & Postmodern Jukebox’s cover of Ke$ha and Pitbull’s “Timber”. Warning: It will get stuck in your head.

Here is “Istanbul” by The Four Lads. I first heard this during an episode of “Raising Hope”. It’s a delightfully addictive piece of 50’s ear candy. Some of you may be familiar with the cover done by They Might Be Giants, but this is the original.

Lastly, here’s a song my parents got me hooked on. It’s an 80’s band (The Stray Cats) making 50’s inspired songs. YES Y’ALL.

What do you guys think of Music Mondays? Are there any themes you would like to see? Comment below!

Far From Normal

Many of us think that our lives are exceedingly normal. Boring, even. We think there is nothing extraordinary the ebb and flow of our days, our routines, where we go, or what we do.

Don’t get caught in that trap!

Whether you’re in the workforce or if you are a full-time student, it is important to stand back and objectively look at the unique and interesting things in your life, lest you fall into the depressing grip of what you assume is monotony.

After doing just that, I thought I would share 5 things about my life that are worth noting.

1)      After completing my degree at George Mason University, I will be the first person in my immediate and extended families with a bachelor’s degree.

2)      I stopped growing taller in the 6th grade at 5 feet, 1.5 inches. That was the last time in my life I was one of the tallest kids in class.

3)      My first car was a white 1997 Geo Metro. I could rarely get it to go above 50 mph on the highway. If there was another person in the car, I would have to turn off the AC to accelerate at an acceptable pace. My car had an ugly hood, so my dad put a LeBra on it (google it). My car almost made worst car in my senior yearbook. I got beaten by a girl with a creeper van.

4)      While most may not guess by looking at me, I like video games. I used to play World of Warcraft when the monthly fee was feasible. I play Diablo 3 and am looking forward to the new expansion next month. I also currently like Zelda Windwaker HD for the Wii U.

5)      I’m published. I have an article published on and I am currently working on two new articles that will likely be published within the next two weeks.

While these things may not seem significant because I am exposed to them all of the time, these factoids might seem really interesting to other people. That’s the key takeaway. Everyone is interesting. Everyone has a story. Don’t ever think that you’re just a sheep in the herd. You are your own person and are someone to be celebrated. Take time to recognize what sets you apart, and work it.

P.S. What sets you apart from others? Comment below!

If you’ll kindly scroll up, you’ll see a new web page called “Blogroll”. Go ahead, give it a click. I know you’ll like it. You’ll find an ever-growing list of blogs and websites that I love and why I love them.

As a blogger, it’s my responsibility to help you run out of webpages to visit. If you’re goal is to run out of internet to view, I am your enabler.

Budget Bytes – My New Favorite Budget Recipe Resource

Hola, fellow FlatBrok-ers! (I’m trying out a different greeting. How is it going over?)

Since the new year, I have been able to stick to my resolution of working out at least 3 days a week (yay me!) and have mostly been able to keep up with eating in a healthful way. It’s likely we all slip off the bandwagon. Maybe it’s because some healthy foods seem inconvenient or maybe you think you can’t eat healthy on a budget.

Well these are valid excuses no more!

About a week and a half ago I stumbled upon a wonderful blog run by a lovely lady named Beth. That blog is Budget Bytes. And let me tell you, it was love at first click.

The site is chock full of very well organized recipes for every craving. You want budget breakfast recipes? Beth’s got ’em. Indian dishes? Beth’s got ’em. Vegetarian and vegan recipes? She has them too.

And what sets this blog ahead of other frugal blogs is the fact that she breaks down the price of every ingredient, each serving, as well as the entire recipe! Budget Bytes is focused filling, healthful, (and lately sriracha-coated) budget recipes, which is great since the boyfriend and I are trying to eat a diverse yet healthy and satisfying diet. I guess we’re picky like that.

If you want a more healthful diet than the stuff that you buy at the college food court (hello, sodium and cholesterol) then check this website out. To get you started, check out my favorite recipe: the Honey Sriracha Chicken Thighs. The boyfriend even called them “badass”.

Til next time!

Cosmopolitan Retweeted Me Today!

*cue feeling famous for a few seconds*

So, I’m pretty psyched that Cosmopolitan magazine retweeted me today. If you’re curious as to what my tweet was, fear not, I’ll tell you. I just have to explain it first.

It was reported through multiple media outlets earlier this week that former Rebupblican Governor of Arkansas Mike Huckabee said the following in response to the “anti-Republican War on Women narrative”:

Our party stands for the recognition of the equality of women and the capacity of women. That’s not a war on them. It’s a war for them. And if the Democrats want to insult the women of America by making them believe that they are helpless without Uncle Sugar coming in and providing for them a prescription each month for birth control, because they cannot control their libido or their reproductive system without the help of the government, then so be it.

Huckabee went on to say that women across America feel insulted and “outraged” when the Democratic Party makes them out to be nothing more than “victims of their gender”. Click here to see the full article.

Well, this has angered a few folks.

Women and men across the country are balking at Huckabee, in part because his rant makes him seem as though women are uncontrollable sex-beasts whose only purpose is to have sex for conceiving; maybe even that women should not be able to choose to put off or avoid pregnancy when possible.

In response, #CantControlMyLibido has been trending on twitter by users who wish to show the ridiculousness of Huckabee’s comments. I decided to speak out on my twitter page today, using this hashtag. Here’s my tweet in response to the Huckabee controversy that got retweet by @Cosmopolitan today:

Where do you stand on what Huckabee said? Have you ever been retweeted by a famous twitter handle? Comment below!
